My Easter break in Tekapo from Wendy's Quilts and More

At Easter I went to Tekapo in the middle of the South Island of New Zealand.  The mountains and lakes are amazing there and the weather was beautiful.  The place we stayed at had great views and a big deck off the lounge.

I took some quilting along because our Capital Quilters exhibtion is fast approaching and I'm not ready!! I still have two quilts in progress and this is one of them.  It's the Trip Around the World that I started in January.  You can read more about it here.

It's quite a bit colder in ...

Quilted Presents from Quilting Studio Adventures

My granddaughter Nikki is getting married in June, and her bridal shower is coming up.  Working with Nikki's colors and some wonderful fabrics by Seth Apter, here is her quilt.  Of course I hand quilted it in an off-center spiral and backed it with an Art Gallery cotton.  With the wool batting, this quilt is wonderfully soft and will provide a lifetime of cuddling.

And while not a necessity, of course I made a matching tote bag which really allows two of the feature fabrics to shine.

And while working on Nikki's quilt, I also started one for ...

Purses and Trips Around the World from Quilting Studio Adventures

Preface:  As the rhythm of my life changes, so do my blogging habits.  I am sewing more than ever but apparently only doing a blog post a month.  Sometimes I get so caught up in quilting projects that purses take a back seat.  I'm happy to announce that I have gotten past my purse block.  Several of these purses were made before Christmas, and they have just been waiting to be mailed.  I finally got busy and made several more.

So many of these purses were inspired by the scraps I had at hand.  And since I've been ...

A Trip Around the World from Wendy's Quilts and More

Happy New Year everyone.

No sooner had I dropped my mum and dad at the airport on 27 December than I started getting inspired on Instagram.  Often I will start a Christmas themed cross stitch between Christmas and New Year, but this year I started a Christmas quilt and I had the whole top pieced in just seven days.

I was inspired by this photo on Instagram:

But I used the brighter colours from this Christmas gift bag:

The photo I liked was by Edyta Sitar so I used her Laundry Basket Quilts PDF pattern for a Trip Around the ...

Photo session............. from Exuberant Color

I started the morning yesterday by moving the couch and spreading the quilts one at a time on the carpeting.  This one is a Blooming 9 Patch (Blanche Young, Tradition With a Twist) that I reconfigured by adding one more square down the middle and cutting the strips 2" instead of 1.75" so that it would fit a queen bed.

Speaking of on a queen size bed, I moved 38 wallhangings off the guest bed so I could take these photos.  30 of them are hanging over the back of a bench in my living room and 8 of ...

First finish for November................ from Exuberant Color

I haven't tried to measure this Trip Around the World quilt or to pin it to my design wall yet.  I finished the hand stitching before noon yesterday.

I took some daylight close up shots of the fabrics.  They are all from the mid to late 1990s.

I was the buyer for the quilt shop I worked at.  When the salesmen came with the samples I would take them up to the front of the store and see where we needed fill in prints.

My Trip Around the World class was popular there and I taught it between 4 ...

18 inches to go............ from Exuberant Color

I wish I had more to report.  I hand stitched in 3 sessions, the last one being about 4 hours.  My eyes were giving out at 11 p.m. so I will finish it today.

The binding is the same fabric as the border, an old Hoffman batik.  The back is a Free Spirit wide sateen backing fabric.  Both have been easy to stitch through.

It was only in the low 30s yesterday and snow predicted starting in the wee hours of Sunday morning and continuing for several hours.  They are talking about 1 1/2" and above freezing temperatures ...

Binding started.............. from Exuberant Color

I got one of the huge quilts trimmed, binding cut and sewn on and hand stitching started.  I have one long side done.  This quilt was started way back around 2000 (or earlier) and was used as a sample in progress for many Trip Around the World classes that I taught.  I finished sewing it together at some point after I started this blog (July 4, 2007).

At the end of 2014 I sewed on the border and took this photo.  Now 9 years later it is quilted and close to being finished.  I'm not sure if I can ...

Cutting little squares............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning my granddaughter and my youngest great-grandson came over to see me.  He is 14 months old and such a happy baby.

After lunch I drove to the next town north of me to see my grandson's house.  He is a first time home owner and just signed the papers yesterday.  I got the grand tour of the house and the big yard and extra garage.

Last evening I tackled the box I showed a couple weeks ago that had the leftovers from several Trip Around the World quilts.  There were 3 strips of end cuts from a ...

Playing in the basement............... from Exuberant Color

It was quite humid yesterday so I went to the basement and started a load of laundry.  I saw this box over by the shelf unit I am slowly re-filling with fabric.  I knew I shouldn't take the lid off.  I get lost in all of the treasures in there.

Back in the mid 1990s I was working at a quilt shop that sent out a newsletter 3 times a year which announced the class schedule.  I taught the Trip Around the World quilt class 3 times a year and sometimes twice in each of the 3 sessions.  I ...

A pile of leftovers from Making A Lather

I had a stack of leftover riley blake fabrics that coordinated rather well. I decided to cut another trip around the world donation quilt. I wanted to cut a bigger size than my last one. This time, I cut 4 inch strips. I want to see the difference. I was cleaning up a spot, and had this leftover pile waiting for an idea. I am not sure when I will start on it. But, the pile is gone.

I hope my reds are different enough

baby quilt finish from Making A Lather

I have a finish for Friday. My trip a around the world baby quilt for charity is quilted and bound. I taught a workshop for this quilt for my guild.

trip around the world quilt class from Making A Lather

I have had a trip around the world quilt on my bucket list for a long time. I had tried the Bonnie Hunter free pattern, but, I did not like the outcome. She had promised that any scrappy combination would work, and, I took her at her word. I managed to have scrappy fabrics that did not work. But, I have still admired all of them I have seen. I started investigating the colors and movement, watching and reading and you tube.  I was determined to try again. I think the key is to have color groups together in the ...

workshop for guild from Making A Lather

My guild has asked me to teach a trip around the world quilt workshop. I agreed, if, I could use what I had on hand. Of course, I would need samples of how to make it. I had a whole bucket of flannel 3 1/2 inch strips, yippee. I am not sure the colors will be a stand out, but, that is the magic of TAW quilts. They seem to do their own thing, no matter what the fabric is. I have the strip sets made, and, it is time to subcut and start laying them out.

I made ...

Around the World Quilt Ideas! from Busy Hands Quilts

This week I've been having fun mocking up Around the World in various color schemes.  This quilt pattern is super simple and quick with strip piecing.

Around the World includes four sizes - Baby, Lap, Throw, and Queen.  All sizes are the same layout with varying block sizes.

The Around the World quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

Fabric for these quilts could be curated from your stash or gathered as a collection.  I do not remember the name of the yellow and blue version shown here.  The red and teal version is Snowed In by ...

ADHD sewing from Quilting Studio Adventures

So many unfinished projects, both in the house and in the studio.  There is an underlying sense of not quite being able to settle down and focus.  On anything.  But slowly the house projects are being finished - kitchen lighting - check. New dining room table - check.  Soaker tub removed - check.  Closet being built - almost there.  What has made everything tolerable is that our contractor works very very neat and is easy to absorb into our daily lives.  For a while I thought I’d have to move my studio out to the dining room, but that just hasn’t been necessary ...

Crushing on Fabric from Quilting Studio Adventures

Sometimes when looking at fabrics, I fall pretty hard.  Designer Janet Clare did some wonderful stuff for Moda with a line called Wordsmith.  I've made several quilts simply because I love working with these fabrics.  Grandson Sam has one of these quilts, and I can't even remember who has others.  When I got low on one of these fabrics, I would look at Etsy and buy more.  This line is way out of print, and it's time to simply let them go.  I think I may have enough for one more quilt, not counting the one that ...

Three Finishes from TheEclecticAbuela

I haven't been posting much lately, but the quiltmaking continues!

This is a flannel couch quilt. A dear friend gave me some flannels, and I added a few of my own to the mix. I backed it with a piece of fleece I had on hand that happened to be exactly the right size!

A Hand-Quilted Trip around the World from Quilting Studio Adventures

This pretty little Trip Around the World (gratitude to Eleanor Burns and her directions for this favorite pattern) was made from fabrics that play together nicely texturally.  I love the jewel tones, too.  I had to make the pattern smaller because I was working with leftovers and fat quarters.  This is 57” x 72” and a great size for napping.  Batted with wool, it was a pretty fast project to needle, about a month.

It’s a nice addition to my quilt ladder which doesn’t have much color.
